This is a hand crafted pūrerehua (bullroarer) made from rimu wood.
Each piece features an engraved Māori puhoro design by Wiremu Barriball on one side.

A pūrerehua is a traditional Māori musical instrument otherwise called a 'bull roarer'. The pūrerehua takes its name from moths, which fly in the same pattern as the pūrerehua. Pūrerehua are often of various sizes and made of wood, stone, and stone. They are a pointy, flat, oval shape with a cord attached at one end.

Each piece features an engraved Māori puhoro design by Wiremu Barriball on one side. The traditional puhoro pattern found on waka and in Ta Moko, blends ancient Māori artistry and flair with contemporary aesthetics.

A pūrerehua is a traditional Māori musical instrument otherwise called a 'bullroarer'. The pūrerehua takes its name from moths, which fly in the same pattern as the pūrerehua. Pūrerehua are often of various sizes and made of wood, stone, and stone. They are a pointy, flat, oval shape with a cord attached at one end.

To launch the pūrerehua, the user would securely hold the end of the cord while spinning the flat oval around and around. Sound would be created due to the air disturbance caused by the flying pūrerehua.

The kaitiaki (guardian) of the pūrerehua is Tāwhirimātea, the deity of the winds and weather. Therefore, it is part of the wind and weather family of instruments.
